A Future Without Art?

I came across this article that says 'the grey square is a symbol of a future without art' [www.greysquare.ca). I found this amusing....

New Books and New People

I have started to look away from photography as my main source of research and I have been looking at painting and in particular Abstract Expressionism. Artists such as.... Albers, Ellsworth Kelly, Ad Reinhardt to name a few. I bought a book of Reinhardt's theory 'Art as Art', which I am currently reading. I like Reinhardt a lot he seemed so involved with his own practice and he was a great defender of what he was doing and although he got a lot of criticism in his time (40's, 50's, 60's) he kept making his work and now is considered a very important artist of the 20th century. I have also just acquired 'The Shock of the New' by Robert Hughes it came this morning so I have merely looked at the pictures as a start. My tutor suggested that I looked at this book and I am excited to see why.

The Blog

The purpose of this blog is to help me communicate some of the ideas behind my research and practice so that not only could a third party understand, but it may help me as well. I've never made a blog and I am a little skeptical about its uses. However I need to try new things so here goes....

Untitled (Sculptures)

2010 AD

As you may have guessed from the title there are 2010 grey squares in this image. You may have also worked out that each square is a representation of a year. In this work I want to show something incomprehensible. When viewing the image it is impossible to see 2010 individual squares, maybe one at a time, but not all of them. You see a block of squares and this is how you understand 2010 as a number you don't have the individuals in front of you just something that suggests them. The choice of representing time was created because although time gets fragmented by people into days, months or in this case years time is actually just one thing, it is not fragmented it is a line if you will. The empty space at the bottom of the image is left empty to give the impression of future, but an un-written future as if time could just stop at one of these perfect intervals never to continue.
